In December of 2011, I went to S. Korea to visit one of my besties whose husband was stationed in Songtan, about 45 minutes outside of Seoul. It was an amazing trip. One of the highlights was a huge Asian market called H Mart. It was like the Disneyland of product presentation. The packaging on every item was bright and colorful. There was an entire aisle of tofu, an entire aisle of seaweed, an entire aisle of vermicelli noodles, an entire aisle of rice….you get the idea. I went nuts taking pictures.

Fast forward to 2018, and I’m driving around Cedar Park trying to kill a little time before a staging consultation and what do I drive by? You guessed it, an H Mart. I had no idea we had one of these in Austin. I veered across 3 lanes of traffic to make a pretty enthusiastic right turn. I couldn’t wait to get in there.

When you first walk in, the smell of fish and seafood is prevalent, but you get used to it after a few minutes. I wandered up and down every aisle, looking at the offerings. I’ve been on a bit of a ramen kick anyway, so it was serendipity that I happened upon H Mart. I picked out about 8 different kinds of vegetarian ramen; sesame ramen, mushroom ramen, assorted vegetable ramen, etc. Then I made my way to the sake aisle. My favorite is the unfiltered cold sake, called Nigori. I selected about 6 different bottles of this to try. I won’t lie, I’ve tried more than half of them and they are all delicious. The best one so far was mango flavored.

Not only do they have aisles and aisles of amazing food, they also have gifts, housewares, window treatments and skin care products. South Korea in particular is known for plastic surgery, so their skin care section is pretty big, and beautifully merchandised, just like the rest of the store.  Hello Kitty is everywhere, this is one of my favorites:

So the next time you’re feeling adventurous, or you’re just craving Asian food, go to H Mart. They have everything you need to make a stir fry, or sushi, or fried rice, or whatever yummy dish you might be thinking of. You can get it all, beautifully presented in colorful packaging. Although, if you’re anything like me, you’ll think it’s all so pretty, you won’t want to eat it.
